On Friday, August 15, former President Donald Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine. During the nearly three-hour meeting at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Trump hand-delivered a personal letter from First Lady Melania Trump, who did not accompany the trip.
In her letter, which she shared on Instagram the following day, Melania, 55, spoke about the impact of the conflict on children in both Ukraine and Russia. She wrote about the universal hopes of children — for love, safety, and opportunity — and urged leaders to protect the next generation.

“Every child shares the same quiet dreams, whether born in a rustic village or a bustling city,” she wrote. “As leaders, the responsibility to protect children extends far beyond comfort zones. We must strive to create a world where every child can wake up to peace.” She implored Putin to safeguard the innocence of children, framing it as a moral responsibility not only to Russia but to humanity as a whole.
Despite the heartfelt appeal, Trump confirmed afterward that no agreement had been reached to end the war. “There is no deal until there is a deal,” he said, contradicting Putin’s statement that they had reached an “understanding.” Trump also indicated he would brief Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders about the discussions.
The summit came amid earlier statements from Trump suggesting consequences if Putin did not halt attacks on civilians in Ukraine. When asked about his ability to persuade Putin, Trump admitted, “The answer is no,” citing continued violence despite prior discussions.
Earlier in July, Trump had announced the repositioning of two U.S. nuclear submarines in response to comments by Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian president and current deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council. Medvedev had criticized Trump’s deadlines for peace efforts in Ukraine, warning that ultimatums could escalate tensions toward war, potentially involving the U.S. Trump responded on Truth Social, saying the submarine movements were a precaution in case Medvedev’s statements were more than rhetoric.
The Alaska summit highlighted the ongoing complexity of U.S.-Russia relations: diplomatic gestures, like Melania’s letter, sit alongside stark reminders of military power and geopolitical stakes. For now, dialogue continues, but a clear path to peace remains elusive.
