A small and fluffy dog was recently rescued from the chilly waters of New York City’s East River and now, she’s waiting patiently for someone to take her back home.

Early during Sunday morning on March 30 the NYPD received a telephone notification. A dog was seen fighting to stay afloat near the South Street Seaport at 8:10 a.m. The NYPD Harbor Unit immediately reacted to the emergency without delay. The quick response of officers resulted in rescuing the small dog from the river.

The NYPD officers transferred the rescued dog to Pier 16, where they provided a warm and comforting blanket to dry her off while giving her the reassurance she needed. The dog rested calmly despite being thoroughly wet all over her body. She still had her bright pink harness on, which made her stand out even more.

ACC staff at Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) received the dog after officers had completed their examination for injuries. Thankfully, she seemed perfectly healthy. Despite going through a frightening experience Hudson showed no signs of cuts or bruises.

ACC staff named her Hudson after the nearby Hudson River because they could not determine her identity from any tags or identification. The veterinarian believes Hudson belongs to the Maltese breed and is approximately one to two years old. She’s small in size but full of charm. According to the shelter team, she’s been very friendly, gentle, and calm since the moment she arrived.

“She is so flipping cute,” said Katy Hansen, spokesperson for ACC. “Everyone here has fallen in love with her. She seems used to being around people and has no trouble being near other dogs. That’s why it’s so surprising that no one has come forward to claim her.”

Hudson didn’t have a microchip, a dog license, or a collar with contact details. This makes it difficult for the shelter to trace her owners. But based on her clean appearance and good behavior, it seems like she once had a loving home.

For now, Hudson is safe and being well taken care of by the staff and volunteers at the shelter. She’s getting lots of attention, warm blankets, and plenty of care while waiting for someone to recognize her and bring her back home.

If you think you know Hudson or recognize this adorable pup from your neighborhood, you’re urged to call 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) to help reunite her with her family.

Until then, Hudson waits with hope wrapped in love, ready for a happy ending.
