Home Alone star opens up about working with comedy legend in new documentary.
Macaulay Culkin is sharing new details about his tough childhood and how comedy star John Candy tried to help him during filming.

The 44-year-old actor, famous for playing Kevin in Home Alone, recently talked about working with Candy in the 1989 movie Uncle Buck. He opened up in a new documentary about the late comedian’s life.
Culkin says Candy was one of the first people in Hollywood to see that something wasn’t right with his father’s behavior. This was even before Home Alone made Culkin super famous around the world.
“John had great instincts,” Culkin said in the documentary. He explained that Candy could tell his dad was causing problems, even when Culkin was still a young kid just starting in movies.
The actor says Candy would check on him during filming, asking simple questions like “Is everything okay?” and “How are things at home?” These small gestures meant a lot to young Culkin, who didn’t get much care from other adults around him.

Culkin called Candy’s caring attitude “paternal,” meaning he acted like a father figure. The young star said that this kind of protection became harder to find as he gained more fame and success.
“I wish I had gotten more of that in my life,” Culkin shared. “It’s important that I remember John caring when not a lot of people did.”
Both Macaulay and his brother Kieran Culkin have talked publicly about their complicated relationship with their father, Kit Culkin. Kit managed his sons’ acting careers when they were kids, but both brothers say he was controlling and mean.
John Candy was a beloved comedian who starred in numerous popular movies, including Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and Cool Runnings. Sadly, he died of a heart attack in 1994 when he was only 43 years old.
Culkin praised Candy for being great with child actors. He said many adult actors don’t know how to work with kids, but Candy was always kind and patient. This made filming Uncle Buck a better experience for Culkin and his co-star Gaby Hoffmann.

“John was always really kind and really good with us,” Culkin remembered.
The Home Alone star has been more open lately about his tough childhood in Hollywood. After taking a break from acting as a teenager, he gradually returned to the entertainment industry as an adult. He’s appeared in TV shows like American Horror Story and started his own podcast.

The new documentary about John Candy’s life will be available to watch on Prime Video starting October 10. It gives fans a chance to learn more about the comedian through stories from people who knew him best.
Culkin’s memories of Candy show how important it is for adults to look out for kids, especially in the entertainment business, where young stars face a lot of pressure and challenges.
