Generally, best friends share toys—these two share the whole street view. Connor’s best friend stands beside him at the window as they watch trucks zoom by, motorcycles roar, and neighbors wave. But there’s one problem: even with all this excitement, Connor isn’t tall enough to see everything clearly.
Five-year-old Connor has always loved watching the world from his family’s front window. Trucks roaring past, motorcycles rumbling, neighbors waving—it’s his daily dose of excitement. But there was a tiny problem: he wasn’t quite tall enough to get a good view.
His best friend, Lucy, a 6-year-old golden retriever, could see outside just fine. Standing beside him, Connor had to balance on a plush chair, barely peeking over the sill. It wasn’t the safest setup, and his dad, Dave Coughlin, always felt a little bad.
“He would stand on a soft chair to see out the window, but Dave told The Dodo he felt sad because his son never had a proper view.”
One day during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dave had some extra time at home. Out of that boredom came a sweet idea—he decided to build a little fort by the window so Connor could sit and enjoy the view.

Dave didn’t follow any plan. He went to the hardware store, spent about $100 on wood, and started building. What began as a small stage quickly grew into more—a little stairway, a handrail, and a few finishing touches. “Looking back, I was lucky it worked out,” Dave said with a laugh.

After four days of work, Connor’s fort was ready. It was strong, safe, and just the right height for him to see outside.
At first, Connor didn’t know how to climb the steps, but after a bit of practice, he figured it out. From then on, he loved it.
Now, whenever Connor hears a car horn or a motorcycle, he runs to the fort, climbs up, and presses his face to the window. And right behind him is always Lucy.

Lucy is just as excited about the fort as Connor. She loves watching squirrels, people passing by, and her favorite—visitors at the door.
“Whenever Connor hears a horn or a motorcycle, he gets excited and runs to the steps,” Dave said. “Lucy is always on the lookout for squirrels or guests, so when he ran over, we tricked her into thinking there was a squirrel.”
Now, they share the fort like their own little lookout. Connor watches trucks and motorcycles, and Lucy has the best spot for spotting squirrels. Most importantly, they get to enjoy it together.
Lucy has been by Connor’s side since the day he was born, and their friendship has only grown stronger over the years.
“She is one of the sweetest, most gentle dogs we know,” Dave said. “They have been close since he was born.”
It is a DIY project made from $100 worth of wood. However, it ultimately became a cherished memory. Dave didn’t just give his son a better view—he made a place where Connor and Lucy could enjoy watching the world together.
