A 17-year-old girl died after a large dog attacked her while she was visiting a friend’s house in Australia. The tragedy has left her community heartbroken.

Annalyse Blyton was at her friend’s home in Singleton, New South Wales, on Thursday, 4 September, around 11:30 AM when the attack occurred. A 10-year-old mixed-breed dog badly hurt her head, neck, and body. The dog was part boxer, part bull Arab, and part Irish wolfhound.

The dog was inside a fenced yard at the house when it attacked Annalyse. People walking by saw what was happening and pulled the dog away from her. They called 911 while trying to help. Paramedics treated Annalyse at the scene before flying her to John Hunter Hospital by helicopter. Sadly, she died on Monday, 8 September, from her injuries.

The attack shocked everyone in Singleton. Local politician Dan Repacholi said it was “absolutely heartbreaking.” Annalyse went to Singleton High School, where teachers and students are getting help dealing with her death. The school said they are “deeply saddened” and are thinking of her family and friends.

People have started raising money online to help Annalyse’s family. So far, they’ve collected about $10,600 (which is $16,000 in Australian money). The fundraiser page calls the attack “every parent’s worst nightmare.” The funds will help the family with expenses during this difficult time.

Police put the dog down after getting permission from its owner. The dog’s owner told police that the attack was very unusual behaviour for the animal. The owner said this was completely “out of character” for the dog.

This death is part of a growing problem with dog attacks in New South Wales. Newspapers report that more attacks are happening now than before. A recent investigation looked at seven deadly dog attacks from 2009 to 2023. Officials found that babies and children get hurt more often because they’re smaller and don’t know how to act around dangerous dogs.

Ron Hoenig, who works for the local government, said, “This was a horrible incident. A young girl who had her whole life ahead of her is now gone.”

The government is now looking at changing the laws about pet dogs. They want to make the rules stricter to stop future attacks. The current law, written in 1998, may need updates. Officials are studying what happened in other deadly dog attacks to figure out better rules.

Police are still investigating exactly what happened. They’re preparing a full report for the coroner, who will decide if anyone did anything wrong. The investigation will look at everything that led to this tragedy.

Annalyse’s death has deeply affected everyone in Singleton. People keep leaving flowers and messages for her family. The town is trying to support each other through this hard time.

Many people are asking how to prevent this from happening again. Dog attacks on children are scary for all parents. Some experts say people need better education about which dogs can be dangerous and how to keep kids safe around them.

The tragedy shows how quickly life can change. Annalyse was visiting a friend when everything went wrong. Her family, friends, and classmates will remember her as a young woman who died too soon.

This story reminds everyone to be careful around large dogs. Even dogs that seem friendly can sometimes attack without warning. Parents and kids need to know the risks and how to stay safe.
