Even at a solemn event like Pope Francis’ funeral, Donald Trump has once again found himself at the center of attention and criticism.

World leaders, royalty, and dignitaries gathered at the Vatican today (April 26) to honor Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday. Among the attendees were Prince William, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Irish President Michael D. Higgins, and UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer.

The open-air mass in St. Peter’s Square marked a historic farewell. Pope Francis had requested a simpler, humbler ceremony, and his wishes were respected: his casket was placed on a carpet in front of the altar, topped with the Book of Gospels. Vatican choirs sang Latin hymns while prayers were offered in multiple languages, including Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Portuguese, and Arabic a testament to the global reach of the 1.4-billion-member Roman Catholic Church.

Massed ranks of red-robed cardinals were seated to one side of the altar, facing rows of world leaders dressed in black suits. Hundreds of priests in white vestments filled the next rows, followed by thousands of ordinary mourners.
“It’s beautiful to see all these nationalities together,” said Jeremie Metais, 29, from France. “It feels like the center of the world today.”

Donald Trump and First Lady Melania were seen pausing solemnly before the pontiff’s coffin. However, Trump quickly drew widespread criticism not for his behavior, but for his wardrobe choice.

While virtually every other mourner adhered to traditional black attire, Trump stood out in a bright blue suit with a matching tie, immediately attracting attention. His attire sparked backlash online, with many accusing him of showing “no class” and “no respect” at such a sacred occasion.

Observers were quick to highlight the irony, recalling Trump’s earlier criticism of President Zelenskyy for not wearing formal clothing during a White House meeting. One social media user commented, “Zelenskyy should ask Trump why he’s the only one wearing a blue suit at the Pope’s funeral. Doesn’t he own a black suit?”

Others suggested Trump was deliberately trying to stand out, describing the choice as “desperate for attention” and “zero respect.”

Despite the criticism, White House press officials defended Trump. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, “The president looked great and presidential alongside our stunning First Lady, who was, as usual, dressed perfectly for the occasion.” Communications Director Steven Cheung added that critics should be “ashamed” for trying to distract from the purpose of the event honoring Pope Francis.

Following the service, in another poignant break with tradition, Pope Francis’ coffin was transported through the streets of Rome. As per his wishes, a group of poor and needy individuals awaited him at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, symbolizing his lifelong dedication to the marginalized.

Yet even amid such profound moments of unity and reverence, Donald Trump’s fashion choice ensured that controversy was never far behind.
